Week 1 Reflection: Planting the Seeds of Sustainability
Week 1 Reflection: Getting Started with Sustainable Development
In our first assignment, we explored a YouTube video, attended lectures, and worked together using Padlet during the Ta’aruf (Introduction) session. These activities helped us understand what sustainable development (SD) really means.
What I Learned
Sustainable development, as explained in the Brundtland Report (1987), is about meeting our needs today without harming the ability of future generations to meet theirs. 🌍 It's not just about protecting nature—it’s also about balancing the environment, society, and the economy.
Three main ideas stood out to me:
-
We must live within the limits of the Earth.
-
The economy, society, and nature are all connected.
-
We should make things fair for both current and future generations.
We also learned how the world moved from Millennium Development Goals (MDGs) to the broader Sustainable Development Goals (SDGs). I enjoyed learning about all 17 SDGs, especially goals like ending poverty, fighting climate change, and achieving gender equality. These challenges felt huge but also inspiring.
One teaching method that made a big impact on me was systems thinking. It helps us see problems as parts of a bigger picture instead of looking at them separately. This way of thinking will be useful both in theory and in real-life actions.
We ended the session with two important questions:
👉 What should we develop?
👉 What should we sustain?
These questions made me reflect on my surroundings and how I can contribute to a better world, even though the answers aren’t always clear.
Getting to Know Each Other – Ta’aruf 🌟
Using Padlet, all 20 students shared who they are. It helped us connect, even though we all have different personalities—some are introverts, some extroverts, and some in between. But we all share the same goal: building a more sustainable future.
Many classmates connected SD with Islamic values, especially the idea of Khalifah—being caretakers of the Earth. This showed me how sustainability fits with our faith and values.
Everyone also related their personal goals to the SDGs:
-
SDG 4: Education for lifelong learning
-
SDG 3: Health and well-being
-
SDG 11 & 12: Green cities and responsible consumption
-
SDG 16: Peace, justice, and good governance
Whether in business, law, tech, or social work, we all want to make a difference.
Final Thoughts 🌟
My journey into sustainability started in my first week of high school. I now see that sustainability is part of our daily lives and choices. It’s not about being perfect, but about being aware, ethical, and brave enough to act.
Together, we’ll grow stronger, wiser—and greener. 🍃
Can’t wait for Week 2! 🚀
